The 4th Annual NIH Vivian W. Pinn Symposium, titled, “Improving Maternal Health: Behind the Numbers,” will take place on May 15, 2019. Every year, a large number of women have lasting medical complications or die as a result of difficulties from pregnancy. The United States maternal morbidity and mortality rates are now the highest among its peer countries. During this symposium, leading clinicians and researchers will provide updates on this timely public health issue, including a review of current statistics and health services research, and an overview of relevant programs sponsored by the Federal Government. In addition, speakers will discuss new approaches to improve maternal health before, during, and after pregnancy, as well as throughout a woman’s life course. Lisa M. Hollier, M.D., president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, will provide the keynote address. Vivian W. Pinn, M.D., the first full-time director of ORWH, will deliver remarks at the meeting, which will occur during National Women’s Health Week (May 12th – 18th). Several discussion periods will provide panelists and attendees with opportunities for exchanging ideas and information on this year’s topic.
