Description: | Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series Americans of African descent are at higher risk of diabetes and heart disease compared to Americans from other ethnic backgrounds. The reasons are complicated, an intricate mix of social and genetic factors. For example, the majority of screening tests for diabetes and heart disease focus on triglyceride levels and insulin resistance, determinants based on massive epidemiological studies performed largely on patients of white European descent that may not be as applicable for those who are part of the African diaspora. Dr. Gary Gibbons, who heads the NHGRI Cardiovascular Disease Section in addition to his NHLBI gig, utilizes genomic technologies to integrate the areas of physiologic genomics, functional genomics, and human molecular genetics in the field of vascular biology and medicine. His group has established a protocol to recruit thousands of Washington, D.C.-area African American to the NIH Clinical Center for clinical evaluation and research testing, a project called GENE-FORECAST®. This resource aims to test the hypothesis that race-ancestry differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) reflect the influence of a unique interplay between genomic variation and the 'exposome' of social determinants and environmental factors that influence the pathogenesis of CVD. Dr. Anne Sumner, is chief of the Section on Ethnicity and Health in the NIDDK Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch. Her early work determined that triglyceride-based screening tests failed to detect early cardiometabolic disease in African Americans and African immigrants to the United States. Her lab now focuses on three areas: identifying the best screening tests to detect pre-diabetes and diabetes in blacks; the effect of sickle cell and other traits for both prediabetes and diabetes; and the psychosocial determinants of diabetes and heart disease in African immigrants. |
