She undertakes global health research\, advocacy and policymaking focused on reducing inequities and improving the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable populations\, with emphasis on Latin America. Her main areas of research include access to palliative care and pain relief\, global cancer care and control\, women and health\, health system reform and finance\, gender-based violence and children in especially difficult circumstances. \n\nAt the University of Miami\, she is the Director of the Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas\, Professor at the Miller School of Medicine and a member of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to that\, Dr. Knaul was associate professor at the Harvard Medical School and Director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative\, a program chaired by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen. \n\nDr. Knaul maintains a synergistic program of health research and global advocacy grounded in Mexico. She leads a research team at the Mexican Health Foundation\, is a member of the Mexican National Academy of Medicine and is a senior member of the Mexican National System of Researchers. She is also the Founding President of Tómatelo a Pecho\, an NGO dedicated to producing evidence to reduce the global burden of cancer and the immediate past President of the Latin American Union Against Women’s Cancers representing NGOs from 11 countries. She has lectured and published extensively since 2008 on her experience with breast cancer\, including a personal memoir available in Spanish and English. \n\nShe has served in the governments of Mexico and Colombia in senior roles in health reform and social development and has worked for several international agencies including the World Health Organization. Dr. Knaul has also designed and implemented research projects throughout the developing world. She played a key role in establishing the Seguro Popular\, a model used for evidence-based health reform worldwide and has published extensively on the outcomes of the program.
