Since 2010, NIMH has convened an annual gathering of researchers, funders, policymakers, providers, advocates, and users of mental health services from around the world to discuss research priorities in global mental health, major global mental health challenges, the role of research in addressing them, and current findings from global mental health research endeavors These conferences enable NIMH to 1) Provide a venue for global mental health researchers, including NIMH researchers to discuss current scientific findings. 2) facilitate communication and capacity building so that a broader network of young investigators, as well as investigators with limited research resources, engage in the development of global mental health research as a means to reducing the burden of mental health disorders in the most vulnerable communities; 3) keep pace with research developments in the field in order to identify and fund promising research; and 4) foster partnerships that are critical for leveraging resources for sustainable research outcomes. Since 2014, NIMH has co-hosted this annual event with Grand Challenges Canada, drawing more than 250 individuals representing more than 30 countries each year. In 2019, NIMH is continuing this partnership with Grand Challenges Canada for a tenth annual conference.
