Description:	Dr. Raif Geha's contributions to the field of immunology are numerous and include important studies describing mechanisms underlying primary immunodeficiency diseases, regulation of immunoglobulin isotype switching and atopic dermatitis. His recent studies on the TNF family molecules BAFF and APRIL showed their critical role in IgA isotype switching, mostly via TACI and were followed by the findings that mutations in TACI cause common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and IgA deficiency in humans. Through experimental results from mice and humans, Dr. Geha will describe his ongoing efforts to dissect the role of discrete genes in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The Immunology Interest Group (IIG) organizes activities designed to promote information exchange and interactions among NIH scientists interested in the field of immunology, broadly defined.
