Description:	The FDA and NIAMSD maintain a seminar series to honor the memory of Dr. David Finbloom, former Director of the Division of Cytokine Biology, FDA. This year the fourth David S. Finbloom Lecture in Immunology will be presented by Bruce Beutler, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA. Dr. Beutler's research currently focuses on Toll-like receptors (TLRs). TLRs are widely recognized as key molecules that detect infection. The ten TLRs recognized in man are capable of detecting most infections (whether caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi), and do so by recognizing conserved molecules of microbial origin such as LPS, unmethylated DNA, and dsRNA. The molecular pathways activated by the TLRs are being elucidated in Dr. Beutler's laboratory through ENU mutagenesis and positional cloning.
