Description: Emergency Preparedness and Biodefense

The four years since the mailing of letters containing Bacillus anthracis have seen major efforts to improve defenses against bioterrorism at the federal, state and local levels. In this seminar, Dr. Lucey will describe strategies for defending against large-scale attacks, based on three new government programs: the Cities Readiness Initiative, the Strategic National Stockpile and the BioWatch system for early detection of aerosolized pathogens. His seminar will also cover current issues in anthrax management, including a new clinical staging system, the use of levofloxacin for postexposure prophylaxis, the role of postexposure vaccination and the need for pleural fluid drainage as a life-saving countermeasure.
