The presentation objectives are:

  1. to gain an understanding of the phenotype of Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
  2. to learn about the genetic cause and the mechanism by which it leads to cellular senescence
  3. to understand two bold new current treatment efforts that depend on RNA interference and gene editing
Drs. Collins and Gordon will be joined by Sammy Basso, a 28-year-old man from Italy with progeria. The Demystifying Medicine Series includes presentations on pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major disease problems and current research. Primarily directed toward PhD students, clinicians and program managers, this series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Each session includes clinical and basic science components presented by NIH staff and invitees. All students, trainees, fellows, and staff are welcome to participate.
