\nDr. Sanz is the Mason I. Lowance Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at Emory University School of Medicine, and Director of the Lowance Center for Human Immunology at Emory University and Children's Health Care of Atlanta. His research focuses on understanding how the immune system goes awry in autoimmune diseases and, in particular, the roles played by B cells and plasma cells in producing autoantibodies in autoimmune conditions. \n

\nHis talk will focus on parallels between autoimmunity and COVID-19, including his recent demonstration of a strong extrafollicular B cell response in COVID-19, similar to that seen in lupus, which correlates with neutralizing antibody generation, as well as elevated immune activation and morbidity in COVID-19.\n
