Description:	The NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series. Norman R. Pace, Ph.D., Professor of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, University of Colorado Our understanding of the extent and nature of biological diversity has expanded substantially in recent years. The development of “molecular phylogeny,” relating organisms through their sequences, has given us a quantitatitive view of biological diversity. This is embodied in molecular sequence-based phylogenetic trees that can relate all life. We can now define what we mean by “biological diversity” in terms of sequence relationships among sequences (organisms) compared. From that molecular perspective we see that microbial life, archaeal, bacterial and eucaryotic, dominates the span of biological diversity.
