For a number of conditions and illnesses, treatment prior to birth has the potential to improve health outcomes. This potential raises the need for research to identify fetal therapies that are safe and effective. Because fetal therapies are intended to benefit the fetus, but are administered through the mother, this research raises important ethical challenges.
