Description:	Dr. Linda Sherman received her Ph.D. from M.I.T. in Biology, and did postdoctoral research in immunology at Albert Einstein Medical College and Harvard Medical School, after which she started her laboratory at The Scripps Research Institute, where she remained throughout her career. She has served on advisory panels for the National Science Foundation, The American Cancer Society, The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and The National Institutes of Health. She was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease from 2002-2006. She has served on numerous committees for the American Association of Immunologists throughout her career. Professor Sherman was President of the American Association of Immunologists 2014-2015 and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of The Scripps Research Institute. Over the years her research interests have focused on the basis for recognition of self and non-self antigens by CD8 T lymphocytes as exemplified by allorecognition, immune tolerance, cancer immunotherapy and autoimmunity. She has published over 115 peer-reviewed manuscripts. Currently, research in the Sherman lab is devoted to both tumor immunology and to autoimmunity, as exemplified by Type 1 Diabetes. The common link is the importance of immune tolerance to self-antigens to avoid autoimmune disease, and the need to overcome such tolerance to raise a successful response to tumor antigens. Abstract: Protein tyrosine phosphatase 22 (PTPN22) is associated with enhanced frequency of numerous autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Graves disease, and many others. I will describe studies that examine its contribution to autoimmunity, and how it also initiates T cell exhaustion during chronic viral infection.
