Abstract: (CIT): Quantitative methodology is currently making a transition from its almost 100 year focus on Null Hypothesis Significance testing to a paradigm that empasizes mathematical and statistical modeling. There are many implications associated with this transition, and several are examined within this talk. In particular, the softening of scientific methodology, and some links to art and literture, are described. An analogy is drawn between this transition and the well-known developments in 17th century cosmology signalled by the work of Galileo and Newton.
