This year’s lecturer is David G. I. Kingston, Ph.D., University Distinguished Professor, Director, Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery, Department of Chemistry at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Kingston’s talk “Natural Products: Drugs and Medicines for All Reasons and All Seasons” will review some of the past successes of the natural products approach, with an emphasis on natural products with anticancer activity, and on the reasons for the success of natural products as drugs and as herbal medicines.
Dr. Kingston studies natural products for medical usefulness, with cancer and malaria as particular targets. He is the principal investigator and group leader for an ongoing biodiversity utilization and conservation project which started in Suriname in South America and is now located in Madagascar. In addition to scientific discoveries of new bioactive natural products, this project has assisted in the creation of the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and of new protected areas in Madagascar.
The Stephen E. Straus Distinguished lecture was established to honor Dr. Straus, the founding director of NCCAM. This series brings leading figures in science and medicine to the NIH to speak about their perspective on the field of complementary health therapies. The lectures shed light on the evolution of complementary health practice and research, and the current use of complementary therapies by the public.
