DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alexandra McPherron\nMetabolomics Interest Group\n\nMyostatin is a secreted protein produced by skeletal muscle that regulates muscle mass. Myostatin 'knockout' mice\, made by deleting the myostatin gene by gene targeting\, have a dramatic and widespread increase in skeletal muscle mass. Currently\, Dr. McPherron's team is trying to understand how myostatin inhibits skeletal muscle mass at the cellular and molecular level both during development and in adulthood using the mouse as a model system. She will present her team's work on the effects of muscle hypertrophy on metabolism of muscle\, fat\, liver\, and in serum and disucss possible implications of Myostatin inhibitors may be useful therapeutically to treat diabetes or obesity.
