CARLTON WILL GIVE INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS AND THEN WE'LL OPEN FOR DISCUSSIONS AB HOW PEOPLE HANDLE THE CHALLENGES IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES. SO I HAVE MY ONE SIMPLE DEMONSTRATION. LIFE IS ABOUT TAKING THE DIFFERENT PARTS AND BALANCING THEM AND YOU MIGHT BE A PERSON WHO TAKES PARTS OF YOUR LIFE AND BLAPS BALANCES EQUALLY. SO YOU HAVE YOUR WORK LIFE AND YOUR HOME LIFE, AND YOU HAVE IT BALANCED OR NOT. THE KEY POINT TO THIS IS THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENCE BALANCE POINTS. SO SOME PUT MORE WEIGHT ON ONE SIDE OF LIFE THAN THE OTHER AND THEY HAVE TO MOVE THE BALANCE POINT OVER SO THAT THEY CAN WEIGHT THE PARTS OF THEIR LIVES APPROPRIATELY AND MAKE IT COME OUT WITH THE IMPORTANCE THEY HAVE. SO NOT EVERYBODY IS THE SAME AND WE HAVE TO DECIDE WHICH BALANCE POINTS FOR EACH OF USCH WE HAVE TO BALANCE OVER DIFFERENCE TIME FRAMES SO BALANCE ON A DAILY BASIS. YOU NEED TO EXERCISE. A WEEKLY BASIS, MAYBE YOU NEED TO GET SOME SPIRITUAL INSIGHT. WE HAVE TO BALANCE THINGS ON A YEARLY TIME FRAME. TAKE A VACATION, GET AWAY. WE HAVE TO BALANCE ON A LIFETIME SCALE AS WELL. IN ACADEMIA WE TAKE SABBATICALS SO WE CAN GO AWAY, LEARN SOMETHING NEW, GET NEW INSIGHTS AND TAKE TIME OUT OF LIFE TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS, WE MIGHT TAKE CERTAIN PARTS OF LIVES AN DEDICATE TO FAMILY. FAMILY CAN BE PARTNERS, AIMING PARENT, IT CAN BE CHILDREN. SO THERE'S THINGS TO WEAVE TOGETHER THE MAKE LIFE BALANCE. SO I WAS GOING TO OFFER THREE DIFFERENT PIECES OF ADVICE AND TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY STORY AND HOW I HAVE TRIED TO BALANCE THINGS. MY THREE PIECES ARE FIRST, MAKE A PLAN, SECOND, BE WILLING TO MODIFY THE PLAN, THIRD, BE WILLING TO THROW THE PLAN OUT THE WINDOW WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU ADMIT TO BEING PLANNERS IN THIS ROOM. I WOULD ASSUME THAT MOST OF YOU TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY HAD TO PLAN. YOU HAD TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO DO YOUR Ph.D. ON, YOU HAD TO FIGURE OUT WHAT EXPERIENCES -- EXPERIMENTS OR RESEARCH, HOW TO GET YOUR NEXT POSITION, YOU DID A LOT OF PLANNING TO GET WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. I STARTED OFF WITH A PLAN. SO I WAS VERY INTERESTED IN SCIENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS A CHEMIST, I WANTED TO BE A CHEMIST. MY DAD SAID TO E ME, KAREN YOU NEED TO GET A JOB SO YOU BETTER BECOME AN ENGINEER. SO I THOUGHT THAT WAS PROBABLY REASONABLE ADVICE SOY WENT TO COLLEGE AND BECAME A CHEMICAL ENGINEER. IT CAME TIME TO GO GET A JOB AND I STARTED INTERVIEWING WITH EXON AND BIG OIL COMPANIES. SUDDENLY I REALIZED WHAT IT MEANT TO BE A CHEMICAL ENGINEER. IT WAS MY FIRST MOMENT WHICH I HAD TO MODIFY MY PLAN. SO I DECIDED TO WORK FOR A PLACE CALLED THE SOLAR RESEARCH INSTITUTE STARTED BY JIMMY CARTER BACK IN THE 1970s, I WAS GOING TO SAVE THE WORLD. THAT WAS MY PLAN. UNFORTUNATELY RONALD REAGAN GOT ELECTED. HE DECIMATED PRETTY MUCH THE SOLAR ENERGY. SO I DECIDED TO MODIFY MY PLAN AGAIN. AND I WENT TO GRADUATE SCHOOL, AND I WAS AT THAT TIME GOT MARRIED, MY HUSBAND WAS ALSO IN GRADUATE SCHOOL AND WE STARTED SORT OF LEAP FROGGING OUR WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I -- HE WENT TO GRAD SCHOOL FIRST THEN I STARTED IN GRAD SCHOOL, HE FINISHED FIRST, HE WENT AND DID A POST-DOC, I WHEN AND DID A POST-DOC AND THEN GET A JOB AND THEN HE WENT AND GOT A JOB. SO WE MADE IT ALL WORK. BY CONLEY MODIFYING THIS PLAN. I DECIDED THAT I WANTED TO HAVE A FAMILY, AND I THOUGHT THE BEST WAY FOR ME TO BALANCE HAVING A FAMILY AND HAVING A JOB WAS TO WORK IN A SMALL CONTRACT RESEARCH COMPANY WHERE YOU COULD DO FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH, SO I DID THE SAME THINGS THAT YOU'RE ALL THINKING OF DOING. I WROTE RESEARCH PROPOSALS, FUNDING FROM NASA, STUDY ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOL, WHEN THE POLAR OZONE HOLE WAS BEING DISCOVERED. I WORKED AT THE SMALL COMPANY AND STARTED TRYING TO HAVE A FAMILY. THAT WAS MY PLAN, IT IT DIDN'T WORK OUT. EVENTUALLY LIFE THROUGH ME A COUPLE MORE CURVE BALLS AND I LOST MY PARENTS SUDDENLY, I HAD VERY DIFFICULT PREGNANCY, I FINALLY HAD MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER AND THN I HAD A SECOND DAUGHTER AND SUDDENLY THIS PLAN OF HAVING MY HUSBAND HAD AN ACADEMIC POSITION AN WORKING IN THIS SMALL COMPANY AND WE WERE LIVING HALFWAY IN BETWEEN AND COMMUTING IN BOTH DIRECTIONS, IT WASN'T WORKING SO THE BALANCE WAS OFF. I COULDN'T SEEM TO MAKE IT ALL WORK. SO THAT WAS THE MOMENT WHEN I THROUGH THE PLAN OUT THE WINDOW. AND I DECIDED TO LIT ALLEY TAKE EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT CHEMISTRY, PUT IT BEHIND ME AND MY HUSBAND AND I DECIDED TO START COLLABORATING. I DID A LOT OF WORK WITH OPTICS AND HAD ALWAYS USED THAT IN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. SO I DECIDED TO USE THAT TO STUDY VISION. VISION, OPTICS MAKES SENSE. I TOOK MYSELF OUT OF CHEMISTRY AND PUT MYSELF INTO BIOLOGY. I LIKEN IT A LITTLE BIT TO CLIMBING A 30-FOOT HIGH DIVING BOARD THEN TAKING A STEP OFF AND SEEING IF I LANDED IN THE POOL. FORTUNATELY I DID. I TOOK COURSES, GOT NSF FUND, AT THAT TIME THE NSF HAD A PROGRAM FOR WOMEN CALLED POWER, THE TAKE WOMEN IN INDUSTRY AND BRING THEM BACK INTO ACADEMIA. THIS WAS PERFECT. WRITE A PROPOSAL. I WAS SWITCHING FIELDS, BACK INTO ACADEMIA, I GOT SOME FUNDING, I WAS INTERESTED IN TEACHING SO I DEVELOPED WAYS TO TEACH PHYSICS FOR BIOLOGISTS A WAY TO BRING EXPERTISE TO ACQUIRE IN A TOTALLY NEW FIELD AND MAKE MYSELF UNIQUE IN THAT WAY. MY FIRST GRADUATE STUDENT WHO HAPPENED TO BE TYRONE. SO WE HAD A GREAT TIME. [LAUGHTER] WE HAD A GREAT TIME DOING RESEARCH WE STUDIED THE FISH WITH A WONDERFUL VISUAL SYSTEM. I PARLAYED THAT INTO GETTING AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION. SO CHANGING CAREERS GAVE ME A WHOLE BUNCH OF FLEXIBILITY. SO I TOOK TIME OUT TO RETRAIN MYSELF WHILE I TOOK THAT TIME OUT, I WAS WORKING PART TIME, I WAS ABLE TO STAY HOME MORE WITH MY YOUNG CHILDREN WE WAS IMPORTANT TO ME. I HAD NO BOSS WHICH MEANT I COULD GO TO O WORK WHEN I WANTED TO AND WHEN THE KID WERE SICK I STAYED HOME. I DIDN'T HAVE TO CALL UP AND WORRY ABOUT IT. SO THAT GAVE ME FLEXIBILITY. I NOW HAVE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, I BECAME ASSISTANT PROFESSOR UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND AND GOT TEN YOUR THE YEAR MY OLDEST DAUGHTER GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL. SO IT'S NOT THE CONVENTIONAL CAREER PATH. BUT IT IS A VERY INTERESTING PATH TO GET FROM POINT A TO POINT B. I THINK THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE THAT MIGHT HAVE GONE ALONG A MORE STRAIGHT PATH RATHER THAN ME YANDING ARE PATH THAT I TOOK. BUT IT WAS A RICH PATH FOR ME IT WAS A WAY TO DO REALLY UNIQUE THINGS AND I'M HAPPY TO BE WHERE I AM NOW WITH TWO BACKGROUNDS THAT I CAN BRING TOGETHER AN WORK AT THIS INTERFACE WHERE OTHER PEOPLE ARE NOT AS FLUENT. SO I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH A QUOTE FROM RALPH WALDO EMERSON, DO NOT GO WITH THE PATH MAY LEAD GO IP STEAD WHERE THERE SNOW PATH AND LEAVE A TRAIL. FOR ME IT WAS MY -- THE WEEK I WAS DECIDING WHAT LAB I WAS GOING TO REAT A TIME INTO, SO IT WAS EARLY IN MY GRADUATE CAREER AS YOU CAN IMAGINE. MY WIFE WAS GOING INTO SCIENCE, SHE HAD TO FINISH UNDERGRADUATE AND WE HAD TO MAKE IT WORK. WE HAD A BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER SEVEN MONTHS AFTER THOSE MORTAL WORDS. AND WE HAD TO RAISE A CHILD WHILE BOTH ATENNING SCHOOL AND FIGURE HOW TO PURSUE A PATH. I THINK WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE IN THAT WE HAD DIMP BUY LONCAL CLK HOURS. I'M A NIGHT OWL, I DO REALLY WELL LATE IN THE EVENING AND SHE'S UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND WE WERE ABLE TO EXTEND OUR DAY SO WE HAD A VERY LONG DAY WHERE WE COULD SPEND TIME WITH OUR -- SHE WOULD LEAVE FOR WORK I WOULD TAKE CARE OF OUR DAUGHTER IN THE MORNING, SHE -- I WOULD PICK HER UP IN THE AFTERNOON ON SUNDAY, SHE WOULD PICK HER UP ON OTHERS AN MAY OUR DAY GO VERY LONG. THAT WORKED OUT VERY WELL. SO WE WERE ABLE TO RAISE A CHILD GOING THROUGH GRADUATE SCHOOL, POST DOC, AND BUT I SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH MY DAUGHTER THOUGH I WAS PROBABLY WORKING AS HARD AS ANY OF YOU GUYS WORK IN THE LABORATORY PUTTING IN HOURS. WHEN I WASN'T AT HOME I WAS IN THE LABORATORY WORKING HARD. RAISING A CHILD, IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN, RAYING A CHILD WITHOUT A FINANCIAL SOURCE BEHIND YOU IS AN INCREDIBLE INCENTIVE TO KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE GRINDSTONE AND TO PURSUE YOUR WORK VERY HARD. SO IT WENT LIKE THAT FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND WE MADE DEALS ALONG THE WAY WHO WAS GOING TO DO WHAT AND WHEN.]/> MY DAUGHTER IS NOW 33 YEARS OLE O, SHE'S A PHYSICIAN SO WE DID OKAY IN RAISING HER. WE DIDN'T MESS HER UP TOO BADLY BUT WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME SO SHE ENDED UP BEING MY DATE FOR BASEBALL GAMES SO I HAD SEASON TICKETS FOR BRAVES AND WE WENT TO 12 GAMES A YEAR TOGETHER. SO THOSE WERE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID. THERE WERE THINGS WE DID TOGETHER. WE HAD SPECIAL TIME WITH ONE OF US VERSUS THE OTHER. I HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS ON THIS PROJECT NOW I'M THINKING HOW THIS IS GOING TO BE A SPRING BOARD FOR ME FOR MY CAREER, I WILL LIKE THIS DISCUSSION WITH YOU AN SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TO TALK WITH HER OR WITH HIM AB YOUR CAREER. YOU CAN TAKE SOME OF THE MATERIAL THAT YOU HAVE GOT HERE, YOU MAY WANT TO TAKE THE GOALS THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND SAY I NEED HELP IMPLEMENTING THE GOALS BUT DONE ATTEMPT TO SHOW ALL THIS MATERIAL, YOUR SKILL VALUES AND INTERESTS WORK SHEETS. BUT AUTHENTIC IN THE LABORATORY ON A DAILY BASIS AND WHEN YOU GO TO THE THE INTERVIEW, BE AUTHENTIC. YOU NEED TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, YOU NEED TO COMMUNITY CLEARLY WHEN YOU'RE MAKING PRESENTATIONS, WHEN YOU'RE TALKING WITH OTHER PEOPLE, WHEN WRITING YOUR PAPERS AND YOUR GRANTS. WHEN YOU'RE PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR PAPERWORK FOR JOB APPLICATIONS THAT CLEAR COMMUNICATION IS KEY. WE HEARD FROM SO MANY PEOPLE THE VALUE OF NETWORKING. AND I REALLY APPRECIATED THE DEFINITION THAT SHARON MILGRAM GAVE US FOR ESTABLISHING RELATIONSHIPS PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS. THIS IS A VALUE IN TALKING WITH PROGRAM OFFICERS IN THE SCIENTISTS AT THE MEETINGS THAT YOU GO TO AND MAKING THOSE CONTACTS IN YOUR OWN PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY. WE HEARD TODAY AND BEFORE THAT THE VALUE OF MULTIPLE MENTORS. SOMEBODY THAT MIGHT MENTOR YOU IN THE TECHNICAL SKILLS, SOMEBODY ELSE IN THE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN YOUR AREA OF RESEARCH, SOMEBODY ELSE MIGHT MENTOR YOU IN THE PRESENTATION SKILLS, SO MULTIPLE MENTORS THAT ARE GOING TO HELP YOU NAVIGATE THAT PATH THAT YOU SET FOR YOURSELF THEN I HEARD A FEW PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME MANAGEMENT AND THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S A STRUGGLE FOR ME CERTAINLY. AND OTHERS THAT ARE HONEST ABOUT THE STRUGGLE THEY FACE WITH THIS ISSUE.
