Description:	Dr. Nepom has been at the University of Washington in Seattle for most of his career, and he is now also the director of the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason. Over the years, he has contributed much to our general understanding of the structure and function MHC class II molecules, and he has specifically focused on their link to autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes. His group has also designed MHC class II multimers, and used these as tools to study human autoreactive T cells. Such measurements of autoantigen-specific T cells are particularly important in the context of measuring specificity and efficacy of new immunomodulatory treatments for autoimmune diseases. The Immunology Interest Group (IIG) organizes activities designed to promote information exchange and interactions among NIH scientists interested in the field of immunology, broadly defined.
