High-quality biospecimens are critical to supporting the development of new genomic- and proteomic-based cancer interventions. Recognizing the need to unify and standardize biospecimen resource procedures, the NCI published in June 2007 the NCI Best Practices for Biospecimen Resources (NCI Best Practices) , which outlines technical, operational, ethical, legal, and policy principles regarding the collection and use of biospecimens. Subsequently, a series of national forums on the NCI Best Practices was sponsored by the NCI Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research to educate and obtain feedback from a broad range of perspectives on the NCI Best Practices, including those of investigators, physicians, industry representatives, hospital administrators, cancer survivors, patient advocates, and the general public.
