Description:	Dr. Pulendran received his PhD at The Walter & Eliza Hall Institute University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia with Sir Gus Nossal, where he studied mechanisms of tolerance in B cells following soluble antigen exposure. Since then he has become a major figure in the biology of dendritic cells. He contributed to major discoveries on the role of flt3L in driving DC development, and identified its function in augmenting immune responses in vivo. He was one of the first to identify distinct roles for DC subpopulations in vivo. In addition, he has pioneered the identification and use of specific ligands to TLRs and other receptors that affect the function of DCs as vaccine adjuvants and toleragens, studied the signaling pathways responsible for some of these effects, and is currently applying this knowledge to the development of novel vaccines, as well as to the study the basic mechanisms of memory T cell development. Finally, he has just recently begun to study the function of macrophages and DCs in the intestine in driving T cell differentiation.
