Description:	Dr. Dennis Klinman has given fundamental and pivotal contributions to the field of inflammation and immunoregulation by being among the first to identify and characterized immunostimulatory DNA oligonucleotides. Dr. Klinman headed the Section of Viral Immunology at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the FDA before joining the Cancer and Inflammation Program, Laboratory of Experimental Immunology of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick as chief of the Immunoregulation Group. His scientific interest remains the understanding the mechanism by which immunostimulatory CpG and immunosuppressive TTAGGG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) alters host susceptibility to cancer, inflammation and infectious diseases. His ongoing studies focus on furthering our understanding of the immunomodulatory activity of CpG and suppressive ODN, especially when combined with other immune response modifiers. This includes analyzing the ability of CpG ODN (alone and in combination with other TLR ligands and small molecule immune potentiators) to accelerate and magnify the protective immune response elicited by vaccines targeting infectious pathogens and tumors. Dr. Klinman’s research bridges original fundamental studies of receptor-mediated inflammatory responses with translational applications of his findings to the design of vaccine and modulation of the immune response in cancer and infectious diseases.
