Description:	Dr. Pilch will describe two recent attacks by Chechen terrorist groups in Russia that turned into sieges and resulted in hundreds of deaths. The first, the takeover of a Moscow theater during an evening performance in October, 2002, was terminated when security forces released a still unidentified anesthetizing gas, killing more than 100 hostages and their captors. The second, in which terrorists seized a school during opening-day festivities on September 1st, 2004, is often referred to as "Russia's 9/11." A 3-day siege ended with an assault by special forces units, leading to a final death toll of 344 civilians, more than half of whom were children.
