Description:	Dr. Fields has primary appointments in the Departments of Neurology and Physiology at the University of California at San Francisco. He has carried out fundamental studies on the neural circuitry underlying pain modulation. Much of his work has focussed on brainstem neurons whose activity controls behavioral responses to painful stimulation. Recently he has investigated the cellular basis for conditional hyperalgesia or analgesia by the opioid-related peptide nociceptin/orphanin FQ, and he has turned part of his attention to cellular mechanisms underlying affective aspects of pain.
